The State Council for Technical Education, Assam was constituted vide Government Notification No. ETE.307/55/51, dated 14th December, 1956.
The State Council for Technical Education (SCTE) is the highest body at the State level for advising the Government on all policy matters in connection with the development of Technical Education in the State. The State Council also conducts various Engineering Examination of Diploma and Certificate level conducted at the Polytechnics and Junior Technical Schools affiliated to the Council.
The first meeting of the SCTE was held at Shillong on 25th May, 1957 in the Assembly Building, Shillong, and was inaugurated by Shri.Saiyid Fazal Ali, the then Hon’ble Governor of Assam. The 13th meeting of SCTE was held on 20th December , 2024 inaugurated by Hon'ble Education Minister of Assam , Dr. Ranoj Pegu.
At present there are twenty six (26) Nos. of Government Polytechnics in Assam in different districts which are affiliated to the SCTE. There are twenty two (22) disciplines, spread across the State Polytechnics, all of which fall under the purview of SCTE.
In addition, the Junior Technical School (JTS) at Sivasagar is also affiliated to SCTE which awards a Technical School Leaving Certificate (TSLC) which is equivalent to Class X.
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Govt. Film & Television Institute (DBHRGFTI), Guwahati, is also affiliated to the SCTE which awards 3-years Diploma.
Programmes of the following two Polytechnics under SCTE has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
a. Assam Engineering Institute, Guwahati for five programmes.
b. HRH the Prince of Wales Institute of Engineering and Technology, Jorhat for three programmes.
